I received my doctorate in biological psychology in 1972 from the University of Oklahoma and subsequently completed a two year post-doctoral fellowship in the EEG laboratory at the Langley Porter Neuropsychiatric Institute. From 1974 through 1999, I served on the faculty of the University of California, San Francisco, Department of Psychiatry, and the Brain Behavior Research Center at Sonoma Developmental Center. My chief responsibility was the conduct of scientific inquiry. The principal theme of my laboratory was the study of central nervous system (CNS) maturation and function. This included both normal and aberrant development in human infants and animal models. Various parameters of sensory evoked, and to a lesser extent, spontaneous cerebral potentials served as primary dependent variables. Ongoing research involved the study of neurophysiologic development in healthy and "at risk" infants in early life. One of our most comprehensive undertakings carried out over a 20 year period focused on brainstem maturation along the caudal auditory pathway from the peripheral end organ through associated mesencephalic structures in the neonate. This project involved dozens of experiments on thousand of subjects ranging in age from birth to adulthood including multiple levels of prematurity. Auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) were recorded and analyzed across a broad spectrum of experimental procedures aimed at elucidating changes in neurophysiologic events as function of age, drugs and neurologic status in both longitudinal and transverse designs. Numerous measures including laterality, gender, rate effects, central/peripheral transmission, response amplitude, hearing capacity and medication effects were assessed in order to determine maturational  outcome. Much novel information was gained from this work (see publications). The last few projects carried out in my laboratory included: the effects of cocaine and nicotine on neuroelectric potentials in animals and humans, and the assessment of integrated CNS activity and neurodevelopment in genetically altered mice in vivo. Initially, this work with "knockout" and transgenic mice was aimed at the identification of deviations and/or developmental delays in certain brain regions and neurophysiologic processes during critical periods of brain expansion. A final study utilized a prospective, longitudinal procedure to clarify the relationship between CNS events and plaque deposits in mice genetically altered to express high levels of human mutant amyloid precursor protein anticipated to incur many neuropathological features reminiscent of Alzheimer's disease. Distinct differences were observed with respect to normal littermate controls.   CV prepared August 1997
